Me itseasiassa ajettiin ihan saaren kaukaisimpaan päähän, Les Portes-en-Ré,  ja löydettiin sieltä ihanat markkinat.

From La Rochelle we drove to Ile de Ré. The island is actually located only a 10min. drive away from the city center of La Rochelle. To access the island, you first have to pay 16€ (if you’re with a car) to drive over the 3km bridge to the island. Ile de Ré itself was actually larger than I thought. I stretches out over 30km and due to small roads, the traffic can be quite slow at times. We drove all the way to the other end of the island, Les Portes-en-Ré,  to discover a cute little market.

We also noticed that the island is full of bicycle roads and they seemed to be rather popular. I think cycling is the fastest and most fun way to get around on the island! Unfortunately we did not have a lot of time to spend on Ile de Ré, but it made such a good impression that we want to return someday.

Todella raikasta vaihtelua!

Also the nature there was super beautiful. It changes a bit depending where you are on the island, but all the trees, sand and flowers really make a special atmosphere. I also have to say I really liked the chill and down to earth vibe of the entire west coast. A lot different from South of France and it’s glamor, but that’s what makes the west coast very refreshing! It’s very friendly, family oriented and chill. “New money” is not as visible there as it is in the south. Very refreshing indeed!

Ile de Ré was super beautiful and I think it’s the perfect place off season. Now there was quite a lot of people, but we still loved it! And I can highly recommend a road trip on the west coast. So many great places to visit! 🙂

Have a great weekend Caro!
